The University of Bologna is a public research university in Bologna, Italy. Founded in 1088 by an organised guild of students, it is the oldest university in continuous operation in the world, and the first degree-awarding institution of higher learning. At its foundation, the word universitas was first coined.

The university’s emblem carries the motto, Alma Mater Studiorum, the date A.D. 1088. With over 90,000 students, the University of Bologna is one of the largest universities in Europe. The Agriculture and Food Sciences Department at UNIBO is the largest and receives the most funding from EU, national, and international grants. It was created after UNIBO restructured, combining two departments from five existing ones. This integrated department now covers all teaching and research related to agriculture.
